The Sweet Chestnut flowers in June and July with conspicuous yellowish catkins and provides very good nectar as well as good pollen. In the chestnut-growing areas of the upper Rhine, the Palatinate and Ticino it produces a major flow and yields a dark, robustly pungent varietal honey with a slightly bitter note. It needs moderately dry, lime-poor, acidic stony and loamy soils and grows on forest margins, in parks and traditional chestnut groves. The honey stays liquid for a long time and, because of its aroma, is a sought-after niche honey.
