Add photos to your hive card
Photos of combs, brood or the queen – tied to the colony and to the inspection they were taken at.
When a photo is worth it
Not every inspection needs a picture. But there are situations where a photo beats three lines of notes:
- An odd brood pattern. Patchy, sunken cappings, discoloured larvae – that is better judged by comparison than from memory.
- Before and after an intervention. How did the colony look before you took brood out, and how two weeks later?
- When buying or selling colonies. A picture of the brood nest at handover settles later arguments.
- When you are unsure. A photo can be shown to a bee inspector or an experienced beekeeper without anyone having to travel.
A suspected case
Where American foulbrood is suspected, a photo is no substitute for examination – notifying the authorities and having a sample tested remain obligatory. For the first judgement of whether there is a case to answer at all, a sharp picture of the brood nest is often the fastest route to a second opinion.
Development across the season
Because the pictures hang on the colony rather than in your camera roll, they are in the same place next time. After one season you have a sequence per colony instead of a folder holding four hundred comb photos that nobody can place any more.
Together with the note
A picture shows the state but not what went through your mind. Combined with a voice note it becomes a record that still makes sense in a year.
Mind the storage: depending on your plan there is a limit on file size and on the number of documents. The details are on the pricing page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many photos can I store per colony?
On the free tier the number of documents is limited, on paid tiers it rises considerably. The current limits are on the pricing page.
What are photos in the hive card good for?
For everything hard to describe: a brood pattern when you suspect disease, a queen cell, damage to the hive.
Can I take photos right at the apiary?
Yes, with the device camera – even without a signal. The images are transferred later.
