Why typing at the apiary does not work

At an open colony you rarely have a free hand. The other one is holding the comb. Your gloves are smeared with propolis, the screen does not respond, and the bees are not waiting for you to finish typing.

So you memorise the important bits and write them up later. Only "later" often turns into "never", and five colonies become three in the retelling. The observation you do not record is one you never made.

What is worth speaking

Everything there is no tick box for. Numbers and standard entries are quicker to tap than to say – but it is the observations in between that make a hive record worth keeping:

• "Queen seen, brood nest solid, colony sitting quietly on seven combs"
• "Outer comb mouldy, take it out next time"
• "Noticeably many drones, drone frame not being drawn"
• "Neighbouring colony clearly stronger, give room here later"

Typing sentences like these costs too much time at the hive. Spoken, they are recorded in seconds.

There again next time

What you speak lands in the hive record of that colony. At the next inspection it is there in front of you – instead of coming back to you only once the hive is closed again.

Combined with photos this makes a record that still means something a year later: the picture shows the state, the note says what struck you about it.
