Once iBeekeeper knows your location, the app shows the forecast for the coming seven days. On top of that, the weather is logged with each inspection.
Why the weather belongs with the inspection
Hardly any beekeeping task is independent of the weather – and most misjudgements happen because that gets forgotten afterwards.
- Opening: below ten degrees and in wind, brood chills. In spring that is the difference between an inspection and damage.
- Treating: formic acid evaporates with temperature. The same dose barely works at 15 °C and is too harsh at 30 °C – to judge the result you have to know how warm it was.
- Swarming: after a cool spell with the flow coming on, colonies readily tip into swarming. Knowing the change in weather tells you when to plan the inspection.
- Harvesting: in damp weather the bees ripen honey more slowly. That explains many a water content that would otherwise be a puzzle.
The record matters more than the forecast
The forecast helps with the week's planning. The real benefit shows up later: come autumn you no longer know whether that day in July, when the treatment failed to bite, was thirty degrees or eighteen.
Because the weather is logged with the inspection automatically, it is there when you look it up – without you having had to think of it.
No substitute for looking outside
A forecast remains a forecast, and an apiary often sits in a different microclimate from the weather station. The data is a planning aid and a memory – whether you open a hive today is still your call.
