In beekeeping, brood separation refers to a group of biotechnical measures in which the queen's egg-laying is separated in time or space from the brood already present, in order to interrupt the reproductive cycle of the varroa mite.
In beekeeping, brood separation refers to a group of biotechnical measures in which the queen's egg-laying is separated in time or space from the brood already present, in order to interrupt the reproductive cycle of the varroa mite. The basic idea is the same in all variants: because the mite reproduces exclusively in capped brood, the artificially created distance between old and new brood creates a window of time in which as many mites as possible are on the adult bees and can be treated effectively there with organic acids.
In practice, brood separation is usually carried out by dividing the colony, for instance by splitting off a part with the queen and open brood, while the remaining, broodless part is left to itself at first until all existing brood has emerged. Since capped worker brood stays in the cell for about twelve days, and drone brood a few days longer still, this waiting time must be measured accordingly before the broodless part is actually completely free of brood and can be treated. The same basic principle also underlies complete brood removal, in which all of a colony's brood combs are taken out and combined into combined brood nuclei, so that the original colony quickly becomes free of brood.
Brood separation is especially interesting for beekeepers when they want to form nucleus colonies without losing an entire season, while at the same time carrying out effective varroa treatment, since both goals can be combined in a single operation. The drawback is the high amount of time and monitoring required, which is why in practice the method suits committed hobby beekeepers better than large operations that cannot treat all colonies at the same time.
A common mistake is misjudging the broodless point in time and treating too early, while capped brood, and therefore still-protected mites, are still present in the colony. Only careful inspection of the brood combs ensures that the treatment actually reaches a colony that is free of brood and therefore maximally receptive.
