The willows flower from March into May and are the most important spring flow of all. They provide nectar and large amounts of pollen at the same time, exactly when the brood nest begins to grow. Willows are dioecious: only the male trees carry pollen, while both male and female catkins produce nectar. There is no varietal honey from willow, as the colony uses this flow itself. Anyone with willows at the apiary has the best start to the bee year.
