The popular name for propolis. Bees collect resin from buds, mainly on poplars and conifers, and mix it with wax and saliva.

With it they seal cracks, narrow the hive entrance, smooth cell walls, and coat foreign objects they cannot carry out. A dead mouse in the hive is sealed in and preserved this way instead of decaying.

For beekeeping, propolis resin is both a nuisance and a valuable material: it glues hive boxes together, but is also harvested and used for its germ-inhibiting effect.
