Hive debris refers to everything that accumulates in the colony and trickles down onto the hive floor: wax particles from gnawed-open cell caps, pollen residue, feed crystals, legs and wings of dead bees, and, of course, fallen varroa mites too.

Anyone who regularly checks the bottom board slide gets clues about what is going on inside without a single intervention in the colony. The width of the debris strips shows how many comb aisles are occupied, and fresh wax cap fragments reveal that brood is hatching.

The most important application is debris diagnosis for monitoring varroa infestation. For this, a floor insert is pushed in beneath the screened bottom board, inaccessible to the bees, otherwise they would carry the mites back out. Ants are also a problem, which is why the institutes recommend soaking the paper in oil. After a period of a few days up to several weeks, the fallen mites are counted and divided by the number of observation days. The result is the natural mite drop per day.

For reference, the bee institutes give guideline figures: if more than five to ten mites per day are already falling in July, action must be taken quickly so that healthy winter bees can be raised. After brood activity ends in late autumn, the daily mite drop should be below half a mite; otherwise a winter treatment is indicated. Checking after a treatment is equally important, because every active substance has a residual period during which elevated mite drop continues. Only after that does the natural mite drop show whether the treatment really worked.

Two misunderstandings are common. First, debris diagnosis is an estimate, not an exact measurement: the value obtained bears no direct relationship to colony strength, and a strong colony and a weak colony with the same mite drop are under quite different levels of strain. Second, a single count replaces nothing. Only repeated monitoring over the course of the season shows how the infestation is developing. As an alternative or supplement, many beekeepers also work with bee samples, for example using the powdered sugar method or the wash method.
