Its size is adjusted to the season: wide in summer for flight traffic and air exchange, narrow in autumn and winter against robbing and mice. Suitable protection against mice includes an entrance reducer with a gap height of no more than about six millimeters, or a spot-welded mouse guard with a mesh size of around eight millimeters. Both let bees through while keeping field mice and shrews out.
Anyone who stands and watches learns a lot: bees with pollen loads point to open brood and a queen being present, fighting bees point to robbing, and crippled bees point to varroa damage.
