Certified bee inspectors are trained beekeepers who support the veterinary authorities in matters of bee health.
Certified bee inspectors are trained beekeepers who support the veterinary authorities in matters of bee health. They are appointed by the responsible authority and mostly work on a voluntary or part-time basis. Their tasks lie between the authority and the beekeeping community: they inspect apiaries, take feed ring test samples, assess brood patterns on site and provide technical support for the remediation of foulbrood-affected apiaries.
In the event of a disease outbreak, the certified bee inspector is often the first to arrive at the apiary. The orders themselves, however, are issued by the official veterinarian, not by the inspector. Many state associations train certified bee inspectors in multi-day courses and refresh their knowledge regularly.
For the individual beekeeper, they are also a practical point of contact in the case of an unclear brood pattern or before a first migration. The designation and exact scope of the role differ between the federal states; Austria and Switzerland have comparable functions under other names, such as the bee inspector.
