Hawthorn flowers in May and June, closing the gap between the fruit bloom and the early-summer flow. Both nectar and pollen value are consistently rated medium, and in warm years it is very heavily worked. It grows on forest margins, in field copses, hedges and roadside verges and is common both as a shrub and as a small tree. As a widespread hedge plant it contributes noticeably to the trickle flow together with blackthorn and wild roses.
