Hawthorn flowers in May and June, thus closing the gap between the fruit blossom and the early summer forage. Its nectar and pollen values are consistently rated medium, and in warm years it is visited very heavily. It grows on woodland edges, in copses, hedges, and along verges and is widespread both as a shrub and as a small tree. As a widespread hedge plant it contributes significantly to the trickle flow together with blackthorn and wild roses. British measurements give around 102 micrograms of sugar per flower per day, around 13,292 pollen grains per flower and a nectar yield of around 584 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
