The marsh thistle flowers from June to September in wet meadows, carr woodland and at ditch edges. It grows tall and slender, the stem is spiny-winged throughout, and the flower heads sit in clusters at the tip. It yields nectar well and is one of the most important summer forage plants on damp sites. British measurements give around 216 micrograms of sugar per flower per day, around 2,264 pollen grains per flower and a nectar yield of around 4733 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
