Holly flowers in May and June with small white flowers; both nectar and pollen value lie in the medium range. It is evergreen, shade-tolerant and grows on fresh to moderately dry, sandy or stony loam soils on forest margins and in hedges. Because the species is dioecious, male and female plants flower separately, and both are usable for bees. In woodland-adjacent sites it is a solid addition to the early-summer flow.
