Greater Knapweed flowers from June to September with large purple heads on dry grassland, embankments and roadside verges. Both nectar and pollen value are rated good. It needs warm, calcareous, moderately dry soils and is notably drought-tolerant. On calcareous dry grassland it still provides forage when the lush meadows have long been cut and dried out.
