The Carline Thistle flowers from July to September on dry grassland and dry slopes and provides both very good nectar and very good pollen. Its large heads, sitting flat on the ground, open only in dry weather and close in damp conditions. It needs poor, calcareous, sunny sites and is a protected species, so it must not be dug up. On calcareous dry grassland it is one of the most productive late-summer plants.
