Blackthorn (Sloe) flowers in April and May before the leaves appear and is thus one of the first widespread flows in hedges and on forest margins. It provides good nectar and medium pollen, broadly supporting colony development in spring. It grows on moderately dry to fresh, nutrient- and base-rich loam soils and forms dense stands on embankments and field margins. For beekeeping it is above all a build-up flow; a varietal honey generally does not result from it.
