Lesser Celandine flowers from March to May, covering damp meadows, woodland margins and lawns with glossy yellow flowers. The nectar value is low, the pollen value medium, so it is above all an early protein source. It needs groundwater-fed or seepage-moist, nutrient- and base-rich, humus-rich clay and loam soils and dies back quickly again after flowering. In sunshine it is worked over large areas, on overcast days the flowers stay closed.
