The snake's head fritillary flowers in April and May with nodding bells whose purple pattern is reminiscent of a chessboard. It grows in damp floodplain meadows, has become rare and is protected. The nectar sits in an easily accessible position at the base of the petals. It is used mainly by bumblebees; honeybees join in during warm weather.
