Red Clover flowers from June to September and offers plentiful nectar and pollen. The nectar, however, sits deep in the flower tube: the honeybee's tongue is not even half as long as that of the garden bumblebee, which reaches the base of the flower. For the honeybee, red clover is therefore largely uninteresting, and it switches to clover species with shorter tubes instead. As a forage crop it stands over large areas; for seed production, bumblebees are indispensable.
