Common Dogwood flowers in May and June with flat white flower clusters that are easily accessible to short-tongued insects. The nectar value is medium, the pollen value low. It grows on fresh to moderately dry, often calcareous clay and loam soils on forest margins, in hedges and on embankments. In mixed field hedges it provides a reliable trickle flow in the period after the fruit bloom.
