Common buckthorn flowers in May and June with small greenish flowers. The nectar value is medium and the pollen value low, so on its own it is not a mass nectar flow. It grows on soils that are warm in summer, moderately dry, base-rich, and usually calcareous, on woodland edges, in copses, and in hedges. In species-rich hedges, together with alder buckthorn and hawthorn, it supplements the summer forage and extends the supply.
