The Lilac flowers in May with a strong scent, but its flower tubes are usually too long and too narrow for honeybees. The nectar sits at the base of the tube and remains reserved for butterflies and long-tongued insects. Bees mainly collect pollen and also make use of flowers that have already been bitten open. As bee forage, lilac therefore falls short of its reputation.
