The Alder Buckthorn flowers from May to July, opening its inconspicuous flowers again and again over the course of weeks. A good nectar value and a medium to good pollen value make it a reliable ongoing source in the period after the fruit bloom, which is often poor in forage. It stands on damp forest margins, in floodplains and hedges on waterlogged, often acidic and humus-rich soils. Because the flowers open one after another, the flow drips in steadily and supports brood development.
