Woad flowers in May and June with bright yellow flower panicles and was the most important blue dye plant in Europe until indigo was imported. It is biennial and grows on limestone scree, walls and old cultivation areas, for example around Erfurt. It flowers early and abundantly and is heavily worked by honeybees.
