The Cotton Thistle flowers in July and August and grows over two metres tall, with thick, white-felted and broadly winged stems. It grows on rubble sites, railway land and dry ruderal areas. Its large purple flower heads are well filled with nectar and attract honeybees and bumblebees for weeks.
