Valerian flowers from May to August in whitish-pink umbel-like clusters along ditches, damp meadows and forest margins. The nectar value is good to medium, the pollen value moderate to medium. It needs fresh to damp, nutrient-rich soils and grows over a metre tall. As a plant of damp sites it supplements the early-summer flow where dry meadows have already finished flowering.
