Trifid Bur-marigold flowers from July to September on pond margins, in ditches and on damp mud. Its flower heads remain inconspicuously yellowish brown and have no ray florets. The fruits cling to fur and trousers with two barbed hooks. For the colony it is a small minor flow near water in late summer.
