The Christmas Rose, or black hellebore, flowers from February to April and provides a very good pollen value with only a moderate nectar value. It stands in partial shade under woody plants and withstands frost even while in bloom. For the colony it is one of the very first protein sources before hazel and willow come through. The later-flowering Lenten rose extends the supply by a few more weeks.
