Tormentil flowers from May to September with small yellow flowers which, alone among the cinquefoils, have only four petals. It grows in acidic poor meadows, on heaths, and in open woods. Its root turns red when cut and is used for herbal schnapps. A small but long-lasting supplementary forage source. British measurements give around 33 micrograms of sugar per flower per day and a nectar yield of around 47 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
