Common Broom flowers from May to July on acidic, nutrient-poor sandy and loamy soils, turning whole embankments yellow. It provides practically no nectar; its value lies solely in the good pollen yield. The flower must be sprung open by the weight of the visitor, which above all bumblebees and strong bees manage. In practice this means: broom areas provide protein for the brood, but no honey.
