The Field Bean flowers from May to July, but its nectar and pollen value is rated only moderate to medium. The nectar sits deep in the flower, and honeybees often only reach it after bumblebees have first bitten through the side of the flowers. In addition, the nectaries on the stipules provide nectar without going through the flower at all. As a field crop it grows in large stands and can then provide a useful intermediate flow despite its modest rating. British measurements on beans in allotment gardens give around 53 micrograms of sugar per flower per day and a nectar yield of around 52 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
