The migratory trailer is a trailer or platform on which several bee colonies are transported and managed.
The migratory trailer is a trailer or platform on which several bee colonies are transported and managed. It was long the most important tool of professional migratory beekeeping in Central Europe.
The classic design is a closed wooden wagon, in which the hives are permanently built into several rows along the side walls and worked on from the inside. Larger versions also contain an extracting room, a workspace and sleeping quarters.
Today the simpler solution prevails: an open trailer on which loose modern box hives stand and are secured with tie-down straps. Depending on size it holds about twenty to forty colonies and is considerably more flexible, since the hives can also be moved individually. For smaller operations there are trailers for four to ten colonies.
The same rules apply when migrating as otherwise: moving into another administrative district requires an official veterinary health certificate, and the sign with name, address and number of colonies must be put up at the destination site. Transport takes place during the cool hours, with adequate ventilation.
