The deliberate removal of brood combs with adhering bees from a very strong colony.
The deliberate removal of brood combs with adhering bees from a very strong colony.
This achieves two things: the colony loses crowding and with it swarming mood, and the removed combs form the basis for a nucleus colony. The drawback thus becomes a young colony.
Brood removal is done in May and June, while there is still enough time left for development. It is important to give the parent colony room at the same time, otherwise the crowding is back within two weeks.
