What remains in the hive after a swarm has left: the young bees, the capped brood and the ripening queen cells.
The remainder colony is queenless at first and must rear a new queen. Until she has hatched, mated and is laying, it usually takes two to three weeks, longer still in poor mating weather.
That is why it needs attention: prevent afterswarms by breaking out surplus queen cells, keep it undisturbed during the mating period, and later check whether eggs are lying in the nest again.
