Pollen is the flower dust that bees collect as their only source of protein.
Pollen is the flower dust that bees collect as their only source of protein. It provides amino acids, fats, vitamins and minerals and is the basis of all brood rearing.
The forager bee brushes it together, moistens it with nectar and carries it home as a pellet on her hind legs. In the hive it is packed down and preserved as bee bread.
A strong colony consumes about 25 to 30 kilograms of pollen a year; in the specialist literature the estimates vary considerably further depending on colony strength and year. That is why a location with a varied pollen supply across the whole season is more important than a single large nectar flow.
