Breeding Assessment (Körung)

Lexikon

Körung is the formal recognition of a queen as a breeding mother by the responsible breeding association.

Körung is the formal recognition of a queen as a breeding mother by the responsible breeding association. Recognition is granted only once a complete performance test is available and the results meet the requirements set by the association.

What is checked is not only the performance traits but also the pedigree and racial characteristics. For the Carniolan bee these include, among others, wing index and color; for the Dark Bee, corresponding criteria of its own apply. Breeding material is issued only from recognized mothers, and only their daughter colonies supply the drones for mating stations.

For the beekeeper buying queens, Körung is the quality marker they can go by. However, it says nothing about how the daughter will behave at their own location, since mating and environment also determine a substantial part of the outcome.

The exact requirements for Körung are set by the regional and breeding associations and differ between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The breeding rules of one's own association are always binding.
