Food Comb

Lexikon

A comb that predominantly contains capped honey or stored feed.

A comb that predominantly contains capped honey or stored feed. It is the reserve a colony lives on during dearth periods and over winter.

When wintering the colony, it is placed directly next to and above where the bees are clustered. In frost the winter cluster cannot move, and would otherwise starve right next to full combs at the edges.

A few well-filled food combs from the spring flow are worth their weight in gold in the operation: they help nucleus colonies, weak colonies, and, in an emergency, colonies in late winter.
