The Carniolan bee, the most widespread race of the western honey bee in Central Europe. It is also the stock with the longest history of breeding adaptation to local environmental conditions.
Breeding selects for gentleness, steadiness on the comb, honey yield, low swarming tendency, and increasingly for disease and varroa tolerance. These traits are recorded in official performance tests and published as breeding values.
How good a colony is to keep depends less on the race itself than on how strict the breeder's selection is. For mating, though, it is still worthwhile choosing the race that is also kept in the neighborhood.
