The housing of a honey bee colony in beekeeping. It consists of a floor, one or more boxes, frames, a queen excluder, an inner cover, and a lid.
Common are modern box hives made of wood or plastic that can be expanded upward, as well as, regionally, the rear-access hive. Widespread frame sizes are German Normal, Zander, Dadant, and Langstroth. Only one size should be used within an operation, otherwise combs will not fit between colonies.
Important are a dry location, a draft-free fit, and a screened bottom board for diagnosing mite drop.
