Marking bee colonies clearly: number, QR code or NFC
Standing between two hives in spring, no longer sure which one was the weak one last autumn, costs more than just time.
A marking has to do two things: survive a winter outdoors and stay unambiguous, even when the hive is moved. That sounds obvious, yet it fails surprisingly often in practice.
With five colonies you know them by the corner they stand in. From twenty onwards that becomes unreliable, certainly once you have shifted, split and united them in spring. And as soon as records come into play, whether on paper or in an app, every colony needs an identifier that sits on the hive rather than only in your head.
Marker pen and chalk
The quickest route and the shortest-lived. A waterproof marker on a metal lid lasts a summer, fades over winter and is guesswork after two years. Chalk does not survive the first rain. Both work for a season and for notes like "split 12 June", not for a permanent number.
There is a further problem that shows up later: the number is on the lid, not on the colony. Swap the lid and the identifier travels on with the wrong colony.
Numbered tags and stamped plates
Far more durable, and entirely sufficient for many apiaries. An aluminium plate with a stamped number lasts years. The limit lies elsewhere: the number is all you get. To find out when you last treated that colony, you have to type it in or leaf through a folder.
QR code
A QR code on weatherproof material costs almost nothing and works with any phone. The code leads straight to whatever you have stored behind it.
Two constraints: it needs line of sight and a reasonably clean surface. Propolis, wax splashes or a layer of pollen dust, and the camera no longer finds the code. In the low afternoon sun, scanning becomes a test of patience.
NFC
An NFC chip is read by holding the phone nearby. No line of sight, no clean surface required, it works through gloves and in any light. For work at an open colony this is the most practical route: phone to the hive, colony appears.
And here is the catch that trips most people up.
Why ordinary NFC stickers fail on a hive
Anyone who orders cheap NFC stickers and puts them on a metal lid experiences much the same thing: in the hand the phone reads the sticker instantly. On the lid, nothing happens.
The reason is the metal underneath. It interferes with the radio field NFC relies on and makes ordinary stickers simply unreadable there. This is not a fault of the individual tag and no amount of retrying will fix it. If your hives have metal lids, metal covers or metal straps, you need tags explicitly approved for metal surfaces.
What works in practice
A combination beats any single solution: a printed number, so you know which colony is in front of you without a phone. Plus a code to scan for the quick route into your records. If one fails, the other carries you.
More important than the technology is the assignment: the identifier must belong to the colony, not to the lid. When swapping boxes or moving colonies, take the marking with you and update your records. Otherwise next year the scan will point reliably at the wrong colony – which is worse than no marking at all, because you believe it.
And if somebody else scans it?
If the apiary sits by a footpath, sooner or later a walker will hold a phone to a hive. With a plain number nothing happens. With a code or a chip it is worth deciding what that person should see: nothing, your website, or a short explanation. Your operational data should not be part of it.
