Wild basil flowers from July to September on woodland edges, calcareous poor grassland and dry banks. Its pink flowers stand in dense whorls around the stem, hence the name. It smells faintly of thyme and is visited by honeybees, bumblebees and butterflies. A typical woodland-edge plant of the late-summer forage.
