The spiny plumeless thistle flowers from June to September along roadsides, on rubble sites and on field margins. Its stems are spiny-winged right up to below the flower heads. It flowers for a long time and yields nectar well. On fallow land and at the edges of villages it is a reliable forage in high summer, even though it is regarded as a weed.
