Water mint flowers from July to September with spherical, pale violet flower heads on banks, in ditches and in marshes. It is strongly scented and often forms extensive stands. The densely packed individual flowers are easily accessible and are heavily visited by honeybees. By water it is one of the best late-summer forage plants.
