The red-berried elder flowers in April and May, well before the black elder, and bears egg-shaped, yellowish-white inflorescences. It grows in clearings, along forest tracks and in mountain areas. It provides hardly any nectar, but useful pollen. For forest apiaries it is a small supplementary forage in the period before fruit blossom.
