Japanese barberry flowers from April to June and provides moderate nectar with low pollen value. It comes from Japan and is widespread as a densely thorned hedge plant in gardens and green spaces. Its small yellow flower clusters hang beneath the branches. As an early-flowering hedge shrub it supplements the fruit blossom. British measurements give around 1.4 milligrams of sugar per flower per day.
