Sea thrift flowers from May to August with pink flower heads on slender stalks above dense grassy tufts. It grows in coastal salt marshes, at inland saline sites and in rock gardens. The many small individual flowers in the head become available one after another, so that one head yields for weeks. British measurements give around 37 micrograms of sugar per flower per day, around 935 pollen grains per flower and a nectar yield of around 99 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
