The mahaleb cherry flowers in April and May on warm, rocky slopes, woodland edges and banks. It remains a straggly shrub or small tree and bears small, fragrant flower clusters. It is well received by bees and flowers slightly after the blackthorn. On limestone and in wine-growing areas it is part of the early stone fruit forage.
