The primrose flowers from March to May with pale yellow flowers that come singly straight out of the leaf rosette. It grows in open deciduous woods and is the ancestral form of the colourful pot primroses. It flowers early and over several weeks and is one of the first sources of nectar and pollen of the year in the garden. British measurements give around 172 micrograms of sugar per flower per day, around 47,313 pollen grains per flower and a nectar yield of around 73 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
