Black horehound flowers from June to September by fences, walls, rubble sites and roadsides, where it is usually overlooked. It smells unpleasant when touched. The small purple labiate flowers, however, yield nectar very well and are continuously visited. For apiaries on the edge of villages it is an inconspicuous but reliable summer forage.
