The blackcurrant flowers in April and May with inconspicuous, reddish-green little bells. Leaves and buds smell strongly when rubbed between the fingers. It flowers earlier than the red varieties and depends on good pollination, otherwise the racemes set fruit patchily. For the yield in the garden, every colony nearby counts. British measurements give around 600 micrograms of sugar per flower per day.
